Select a specific "style" for the entire home or for the room. One of the repeated mistakes I have witnessed for years from home to home, is the client not understanding that there is a style associated with objects, artifacts, furniture, fabric, etc. Even the design professional researches the qualities of the style that they wish to create in a room, area, or the entire home. If you are not sure which styles you like than go through library or bookstore books and familiarize yourself with all the possible styles. As you view the many style selections available you will not only narrow it down to your favorites but also begin to understand the elements which when combined together create an authentic style for your surroundings. Each period or era has absolute decorative accessories and pieces which are the signature of the time / style. The more authentic pieces you purchase the more convincing the design will be. Completely explore all the facets of the style. Each style has its own patterns, textiles, furnishings, (antiques/collectable's), of diverse ethnic origin or period.
Possible styles to select from:
Traditional
Primitive
Country (Italian, French, English)
Rustic
Art Deco
Old World (Italian, French, etc)
Moroccan
Mediterranean
Swedish
Early American
Scandinavian
Southwest (Mexican, Adobe)
Victorian
Colonial
African
Arts & Craft
Modern
American
Minimalist (Buddhist, Eastern, Zen)
Eclectric
It is a serious mistake to place an Early American lamp in a Modern layout. Equally, it looks ridicules to have a Victorian sofa in an African room. Yet, I have seen these mistakes made over and over again - even when the purchases are made "new". Knowing the elements of the style that your after is very important in pulling it all together. The examples I have used are outlandish, however, even a country piece placed in a traditional styled home has the same result, it looks foolish. Especially when you are creating a theme room or a whole themed home.
