When I am called out to a new client's home, after I do my initial walk through (to get the feel of the space and the clients selections), the very first thing I take into consideration is the architecture of the room which I am going to do the design for. The architecture of the room calls the shots. What stands out? Use your intuition as you really look at and feel the space of the room. What are the highlights? Is there anything out of balance? What are the outstanding qualities and features? Is the room to tall or too wide? The existing architecture dictates the design and the placement of all artifacts and furnishings.Occasionally, the architecture evens dictates the style you should use.(See the Style link)
Architectural elements to look for:
cathedral walls / rooms
many angled walls
tray ceilings
extended window area (nooks)
main / power wall
pillars
arches
many doors or doors and windows all around
unusual shapes - octagons, etc.)
fireplace or large fireplace wall
tall wall of windows
steps up or down into area
soffits
art niche / nook
These are all architectural features which many demand special treatments or accents to "pop" the room. You may wish to attend to these special architectural elements with a wallpaper, faux finish, bolder color, or different color from the rest of the walls. You may want to create a power wall based on the architecture.
